1) As of the 1st April 2026, the number of pothole jobs that have been issued to the Highway Works contractor, but are awaiting repair, are 5,492.
2) The Highways Asset Management Plan, which can be found at the link below, sets out response times for repairs based on hierarchy of road. The table below details the mean and median response times for pothole repairs issued in line with our Highways Asset Management Plan between the period 01/01/2026 and 31/03/2026.
Completing repairs can sometimes be delayed due to challenges accessing the location in question, this can be due to needing to liaise with National Highways, Network Rail or if there are other roadworks taking place in the area.

3) The longest delay between a pothole being reported and works being completed during this time is 237 days. This was due to challenges gaining access to complete the works as a result of the location’s proximity to the A1, and therefore liaison and coordination with National Highways was required to secure road space booking. A temporary repair was implemented prior to the permanent fix being implemented.

6) The Highways Asset Management Plan sets out response times for repairs based on hierarchy of road. If the fault presents an immediate danger a 2 hour emergency response gang will be deployed. The reason for an emergency response is not recorded against the job issued, therefore it is not possible to determine how many of these were issued for a pothole repair. There were 2,887 pothole jobs issued to the contractor which were a 24 hour priority.
7) All pothole repairs will require some form of traffic management measure to undertake the repair safely.
8a: 2024 - 1563 claims
b: 2025 - 844 claims
c: 2026 - 1284 claims
9) 2024 - total compensation paid was £100,584.41b: 2025 - total compensation paid was £36,830.42
c: 2026 - total compensation paid to date £128.00.
Please note that the total compensation paid is the total figure paid out on closed claims. These figures will increase once all claims have been processed and closed out.
