Councillors are entitled to a basic allowance, plus expenses, for council duties. They do not receive a salary.
Those who hold an office, such as chairman of a committee, may receive extra allowances.
The council decides how much councillors may receive. It does this upon advice from an independent panel. The details are set out in Part 6 - Members Allowances Scheme in the latest version of the Constitution.
Co-opted members
Experts, such as headteachers, police officers etc, are appointed to some committees. These ‘co-opted members’ help with consultation and decision-making.
