Occupational Therapy (OT) helps you live independently at home. It is about being able to do the things you want and must do. Everything is focused on your wellbeing and your ability to take part in activities of daily living.
We help adults aged over 18 who have a long-term disability or medical condition, helping them with everyday tasks and assessing how their home environment impacts their daily life.
We will work with you to create a plan of goals and practical adjustments to support you to live as independently as possible.
What to expect
When allocated an OT Practitioner, we will contact you to introduce ourselves and to arrange either a telephone or virtual assessment to learn more about you. Virtual assessment will be a video call using Microsoft Teams. Depending on your situation, we may need to visit you at home.
Once contact is made, we will:
- talk to you about your daily routine and what you are finding difficult.
- talk to you about what you would like to achieve and what your priorities are.
- observe how you carry out tasks such as using the stairs or getting in / out of your chair or bed.
- look at your home environment and explore how we can support you to be as independent as possible.
What may happen after the assessment?
Depending on the outcome of your assessment, the OT Practitioner may:
- suggest ways to do things differently
- link you with other services and support
- provide advice to you, your family and/or carers
- provide or recommend equipment. Any equipment that is provided will be on a loan basis from the Lincolnshire Community Equipment Service
- provide or recommend minor adaptations. These fixed alterations may include grab rails, handrails, second stair rails and alterations to steps
- recommend larger adaptations such as a stairlift, ramp or level access shower. Will also include exploring the funding options for these adaptations
- provide or recommend Technology Enabled Care (TEC). These assistive technology solutions could be in the form of telecare devices, sensors, or simply ‘off the shelf’ household devices such as smart speakers, smart light bulbs, and one cup hot water dispensers
