Red Lion Square paving improvements to start next month

Red Lion Square
Red Lion Square

Thicker stone setts and a stronger underground foundation will make the square's surface more robust while maintaining its heritage look.

Main construction will start on Tuesday 3 May and is expected to last until late August (subject to weather and any unforeseen circumstances).

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "After years of discussions and planning, I’m glad to say works to improve Red Lion Square’s cobbles will start early next month.

“By replacing the current stones with thicker ones and a stronger underground foundation, the square’s surface will be far more robust and harder-wearing. This means the new cobbles shouldn’t crack or shift, making the area much easier to maintain while keeping the town’s idyllic historic look.”

When work starts, the following traffic management will be in place:
  • Tuesday 3 May until mid-July
    • Full southbound closure of Red Lion Square and St John’s Street with a signed diversion route in place via A6121 West Street, A6121 North Street, A6121 East Street, A1175 Brazenose Lane, A1175 St Leonard’s Street, A1175 Wharf Road, B1081 St Mary’s Hill, B1081 St Mary’s Street, B1081 St John’s Street, Red Lion Square.
    • Northbound traffic will remain unaffected
In addition, a full road closure of Red Lion Square and the western end of the High Street will be in place for up to two weeks during the scheme. However, dates and details are still being finalised and will be shared closer to the time.

Advance warning signs will be erected on site two weeks prior to the date of any traffic restrictions.

Cllr Davies added: "Like any major road improvement project, there will inevitably be some disruption once work is underway. However, we’ll be doing everything we can to keep this to a minimum including maintaining access for pedestrians, shop deliveries and emergency services.

“Our contractor, Eurovia, will also have a dedicated public liaison officer on-site to answer questions and keep those affected up-to-date.

"I want to thank everyone in advance for bearing with us once work starts next month.”

The £1.4m maintenance and repair scheme is being fully funded by Lincolnshire County Council.
