Delayed: Rebuild works on Boston Road South in Holbeach not able to proceed

Signs and cones on a road.

The start of the road rebuild is on hold because Anglian Water’s sewer works need more time to complete.

A three-week programme of specific Council roadworks to return Boston Road South to normal, is having to wait for sewer works to be completed before the extensive rebuild can begin.

Originally due to start next week (Monday July 4), the plan for the stretch of road, which was left closed after a sinkhole opened up on the route, is currently waiting for sewer works by Anglian Water to be completed.

AW was due to complete its works at the affected site by the end of this week (July 1) but this has been delayed because of complications with the sewer lining.

The nature of the road rebuild means that LCC cannot begin its work until the sewer project is completed.

Once that happens – which is likely to be around the end of next week, according to AW - LCC’s team will be able to begin the deep rebuild of the stretch of road between Holbeach Primary school to Cecil Pywell Avenue.

Whilst AW works have been underway, LCC has already taken the opportunity to carry out other jobs in this part of the road that would otherwise have been carried out at another time.

However, once the ongoing sewer works are complete, LCC crews will undertake a full roads reconstruction of the site. Removing affected substrate and replacing it with a multi-layered material build around the asset will shore-up the area and return it to normal use.

These council repair works will happen in two phases. The first part will take care of the sub-layer of the road and the second part of the rebuild plan will deliver the road surface and markings.

The road will remain closed until the works are completed.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways said: “It’s unfortunate and frustrating that we can’t get the rebuild underway as planned, but the timing for works such as Anglian Water are undertaking can be lengthened through all sorts of factors.

“We will get on with the rebuild of the road as soon as possible. We, like all of the residents and businesses affected by this, are very keen to return Boston Road South to normal as quickly as we can.

“I would like to thank local residents and businesses for their continued patience as the various elements of this set of works continue.”
