Hottest. Roads. Ever.

Car driving down road in summer heat

Melting bitumen in places. Record surface temperature set near Grantham. Spreaddie Mercury dusted with sand at six sites. But not as bad as some predicted.

Road temperatures in the county have been soaring, but the forecast 60C surface temperature hasn’t quite happened.

Now that we are past the top of the highest temperatures forecast, the peak road figures across Lincolnshire can be revealed.

Monday’s highest road surface temperature was 56.3C, set in Martin Timberland at 3.33pm. Tuesday’s highest temperature beat that figure, but only just.

The new hottest road title has been taken by the A52 at Roman Café near Ropsley which had a highest surface temperature of 56.6C at 16.07pm.

Spreaddie Mercury, the gritter who finally got to head out on sand-dusting duty for the first time during its last summer of work before retirement, has been out to six sanding jobs today.

Putting down a layer of sand onto bitumen that liquified during the hot spell, Spreaddie was in action at; Horncastle road, Louth. A153 Scamblesby. B1191 High Street Billinghay. Station Road, Metheringham, Swallow Avenue, Skellingthorpe and A17 Gedney Duals.

All call-outs for Spreaddie were made by county Highway Officers or LCC’s Surfacing team.
