The road reconstruction project is set to start on Monday 14 November and will take up to three weeks to complete (subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances).

During that time, a night-time road closure will be in place at the junction from 7pm to 6:30am, weekday evenings only.

The diversion route for the closure will be via A16 / A153 / A158 / B1225 / A631, and vice versa.

In addition, the speed limit through the A157/A631 junction will be reduced to 40mph during the project to ensure the safety of the workforce and drivers.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "The A157/A631 junction in South Elkington is deteriorating, so we’re taking the opportunity using Safer Roads funding to fully resurface it to make it safer for drivers.

"This will include removing any existing cracks or wear on the road, painting new white lines and laying new tarmac which will improve grip.

"We'll be doing everything we can to reduce disruption during the project, including scheduling the works overnight to keep people moving during the day."

The project will also be limiting disruption by:

  • Keeping noise at a reasonable level from 11pm
  • Maintaining access for residents and emergency services throughout the project as far as reasonably practicable
  • Keeping pedestrian footways open to the public throughout the work
  • Having gatemen present at each end of the closure to assist with access and egress

Cllr Davies added: "This scheme is part of central government's larger Safer Roads Fund programme looking at improving safety on some of the county's riskiest roads, from which we received £4.6m in funding from in 2018.

“In addition to these works, we’ve also improved other sections of the A631, including between Glentham to West Rasen and Market Rasen to North Willingham.

“We’ve also worked with North Lincolnshire Council to improve safety on the A1084 between Caistor and Brigg and North East Lincolnshire Council to improve safety on the A18 between the A16 and the county boundary."

Nationwide, the Department for Transport's £175m Safer Roads Fund will be used to improve safety along 50 of the riskiest stretches of council-managed A-roads in the country, as identified by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) and The RAC Foundation in 2016.
