Take flight over ‘Levelled Up’ Springfield Roundabout with newly-released artist’s impression

Works to improve capacity on the A16 Springfield Roundabout in Spalding have officially started.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "Following the successful finish of our ‘Levelling Up’ footway and cycleway improvements near Holbeach Road last month, I’m really glad to say that we’ve now officially started improvements to the A16 in Spalding.

“The first project will see the size of the A16/A151 roundabout near Springfields Outlet Shopping & Leisure increased. As you can see in our new artist’s render of the completed scheme, this will be a massive undertaking.

“When complete, the roundabout and its connecting legs will look significantly different with additional entry and exit lanes on the A16 and improved entry and exit lanes on the A151.

“Similar to our other ‘Levelling Up’ roundabout improvements, this project will not only help reduce congestion on the A16, but it will also future-proof the A16 for upgrades down the line if and when funding becomes available.”

As part of the project, a combination of temporary traffic signals and lane restrictions will be in place as needed. Later in the project, a series of night-time road closures will be in place on the A16 and A151 (more details will be shared as the project progresses).

Cllr Davies continued: “The first two weeks of the project will see the scheme contractor Galliford Try setting up the site compound at the A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout and carrying out preparatory works, including site clearance and removing the current traffic islands at Springfield Roundabout.

“Following that, the focus from mid-October will be on the southwest and northeast corners of the roundabout, including drainage and footway works; road widening; and utility diversions.

“As with all of our major road improvement projects, some disruption to the travelling public is inevitable. However, I want to assure anyone potentially affected that we’ll be doing everything we can to keep you moving including maintaining access to all businesses.”

The project will be funded by a portion of the £20m in ‘Levelling Up’ funding awarded to the county council in October 2021. The remaining funding is being used across four other projects, including improvements to Spalding’s A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout, the A16 Marsh Lane Roundabout, and footway/cycleway improvements in Boston and Spalding.
