A failing section of the A16 between Cowbit and Crowland is set for reconstruction next month.
Update to road closure due to alternative route availability - 28/03/2025
The road closure for these works has had to change. This update has become necessary because the original alternative route using National Highways-controlled roads are not available due to reasons beyond our control.
We are not prepared to delay the scheme further because of this change of plan, we believe that these improvement works need to be delivered as scheduled in order to better the local road network.
Here are the details of the change:
- The road closure is now between James Road, Crowland and the Applegreen Roundabout on the A16 at Spalding. The route is now via Barrier Bank, Crowland and the A1175.
- Signage for the new diversion route has been placed on the A15 South of Peterborough and the A16 East of Eye directing through traffic along both the A15 and the A1175.

A16 Cowbit closure and diversion - updated
Crumbling stretch of A16 near Cowbit to be rebuilt - 25/02/2025
Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: “Anyone who’s recently driven the A16 between Cowbit and Crowland knows that it’s falling apart. That’s why we’ve taken the decision to get in and repair this three-mile stretch of road as soon as possible.
“This £2.3 million scheme won’t be easy, since the A16 is one of Lincolnshire’s most used routes. That’s why we’re carrying the works out overnight – to ensure as few people as possible are inconvenienced by the repairs.”
Dates and timeframes
Monday 17 March until early June (subject to weather)
Location of works
A16, between A1175/B1173 roundabout in Cowbit and the Peterborough Road/James Road roundabout in Crowland
Traffic management
Night-time road closures from 7pm to 6am, weekday evenings only
Please note that the works will be carried out in two phases. Specific dates for each will be signposted on the road in advance of any closures.
Diversion route
Via A1175 to Market Deeping / A15 to Peterborough, and vice versa
Please note that the A16 closure for the Pinchbeck Roundabout works will be in place until late March, between Ten Acre Lane and Springfield Roundabout. This closure is from 8pm to 6am to allow extra time for lorries out of Pinchbeck rather than passing through Spalding.
Cllr Davies added: “Anyone travelling the A16 between Boston and Peterborough at night during these works will need to follow two separate diversions for up to one week – one for these A16 Cowbit works and one for our A16 Pinchbeck Roundabout improvements. This could add an extra forty minutes onto journey times so we’re encouraging people to plan carefully and leave extra time for their travels.”
