Carholme Road’s carriageway set for a full rebuild

Carholme Road, Lincoln

Major improvements to Carholme Road in Lincoln will start in late June.

Cllr Michael Cheyne, executive member for highways, said: “Following on from major improvements to Newland and a small section of Carholme Road last year, our highways team is returning to the west end of the city to improve the rest Carholme Road.

“As part of the four-month scheme, we will be fully rebuilding Carholme Road, in addition to repairing critical sections of damaged kerbs, footways and our highways drainage system while on-site.

“These works will be happening on one of Lincoln’s busiest roads so we will be doing as much of the work as we can in the daytime via narrowed lanes and temporary traffic signals.

"This will allow people to use Carholme Road as usual, albeit with some delays. As the work progresses, night-time road closures will be necessary so the highways team can safely lay new road surfacing without disrupting daytime traffic flows.

“In conjunction with this project, we will also be rebuilding 80 metres of the Carholme Road approach and 100 metres of the westbound A46 approach to Carholme Roundabout where the high-friction surfacing has started to fail.”

Cllr Neil Murray, county councillor for Carholme, said: “I’m really happy to see the county council’s highways team returning to Carholme Road for more resurfacing. The carriageway here is starting to fall apart, as are some of the kerbs and footways – so I think people will be glad to see this busy route getting some much-needed TLC.

“There’s no question about it – there will most definitely be some disruption during the works. However, it’s important for people to remember that this is temporary and will be well worth it in the end.

“I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the finished product later this year.”

Cllr Cheyne added: “Although we’ll be doing our absolute best to carry these works out as quickly and efficiently as possible, there will inevitably be some disruption while our teams are on-site, but we will do all we can to complete this project as efficiently as possible.

“By working in the summer, we will have the warm weather needed to lay new road surfacing with minimal risk of cold temperatures delaying the project. We will also be keeping pedestrian footways open to the public and maintaining access for residents, businesses and emergency services.”
