The A17 and A151 will be fully rebuilt as part of a major resurfacing project.
Fleet Hargate works postponed due to wet weather - 14/11/2025
Please note that completion of the A17 Fleet Hargate resurfacing works, which were originally due to end this evening, have been delayed due to recent wet weather.
Due to other pre-planned National Highways works on the diversion route, completion of this project is now tentatively scheduled to take place from Tuesday 25 November for up to four nights under a full road closure, 8pm to 6am (subject to weather and approval from National Highways).
The diversion route for the closure will be via A17 eastbound / A1101 southbound towards Wisbech / A47 westbound towards Peterborough / A16 north towards Spalding / A151 eastbound towards Holbeach (or A16 northbound for Sleaford-bound and Boston-bound traffic), and vice versa.
Sleaford-bound and Boston-bound traffic in Kings Lynn will be passively diverted onto the A47 to Wisbech at ‘Pullover Roundabout’.
Karen Cassar, assistant director for highways, said: “Unfortunately, this week’s wet weather has meant our A17 Fleet Hargate improvements will remain incomplete until we can return to finish them.
“Because National Highways have planned works taking place on the A47 in Wisbech and Peterborough next week, which are part of our diversion route, we won’t be able to return to site until after those.
“Instead, we’re hoping to complete this project later this month – but this will be completely in the hands of the weather and National Highways.
“In the meantime, we’ve laid temporary road surfacing, installed temporary ramps, and will continue our temporary speed restrictions so the road can be safely opened. However, we ask that people drive cautiously when passing through the works area.”
Cllr Michael Cheyne, executive member for highways, said: “These sections of the A151 and A17 are in a very poor state, so the wheels are in motion for getting them repaired next month.
“This will be a very large engineering scheme, with 1.25 miles of road to be rebuilt using over 8,500 tonnes of road-building material – in addition to the project team also cleaning the highways drains and carrying out some verge and street lighting works while on-site.
“Fixing Lincolnshire’s roads is my top priority, so I’m pleased to see major resurfacing projects like this taking place, alongside our regular maintenance and repair work.”
Cllr Thomas Sneath, county councillor for Holbeach, said: “The A17 through the area is in a dire state, as is Spalding Road – so Cllr Carey and I are very pleased to see them getting the attention they deserve.”
Cllr Neil Carey, county councillor for Holbeach Rural, added: “When the project is finished, the residents of Holbeach and Fleet Hargate, along with anyone else who regularly uses the A17 and Spalding Road, will see a big difference to their drives. They’ll not only be safer, but smoother too.”

Cllr Cheyne added: “Keeping people moving as much as possible during roadworks is incredibly important to me, so the team will be doing all they can to achieve this. That’s why these works will be taking place overnight, when there are fewer cars on the road.
“In the meantime, I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience.”
