Works to improve the area’s road surfacing, drainage, kerbs and footways are more than halfway finished.
Cllr Michael Cheyne, executive member for highways, said: "I’m happy to announce that we’ve officially passed the midway point of our Carholme Road improvement works.
"Since starting on-site in late June, the team has already spent over 4,500 hours on the project. During this time, they’ve completely rebuilt the carriageway between Nelson Street and Moor Street.
"The team’s focus over the next two months will now be on rebuilding the failing sections of Carholme Road between Moor Street and the Grandstand. Not only that, but they will also be fully resurfacing the Carholme Road and westbound A46 approaches to Carholme Roundabout where the high-friction surfacing has started to fail.”
Below are some additional facts and figures about the project to date:
- Over 1,500 tonnes of road-building material used
- 150 metres of new highways drainage installed
- 18 new drainage gulleys installed
- 40m of failing kerbs and drainage channels replaced
- Refurbished 1 uncontrolled crossing point and the Gresham Street/Staunton Street footway crossing
Traffic management for the remainder of the scheme includes:
Continued narrowed lanes and temporary traffic signals will be in place on weekdays
Lane closures on Carholme Roundabout starting on Monday 8 September for one week
Night-time road closures from 7pm to 6am on the following dates:
- Carholme Road roundabout – Monday 15 September for up to two weeks
- Phase 3 / Roman Wharf to Severn Street – Monday 29 September for up to two weeks
- Phase 4 / Severn Street to the golf club – Thursday 9 October for up to two weeks
Cllr Cheyne added: “When finished this autumn, residents, visitors and commuters will notice drastically improved journeys with freshly-laid tarmac and brand-new footways where the old ones where crumbling. In the meantime, I want to thank everyone affected by these works for their continued patience.”
