Residents in the Boston area have had the chance to feedback on the ‘Your Lincolnshire’ proposal to reorganise councils.
It comes as data from the County Council’s Network (CCN) suggests that nationally although savings of £1.8bn could be made by reorganising district and county councils into ‘unitary’ councils, those savings reduce dramatically if new small councils are formed.
The ‘Your Lincolnshire’ model is the only proposal that keeps Lincolnshire together and has a population size that will deliver efficiency savings and cause the least disruption to services. It would see the existing eight councils merge into one across the county area.
The CCN analysis shows that splitting two-tier areas into new unitary authorities that have fewer than 500,000 people, could cost local taxpayers hundreds of millions and deliver no savings.
Public events are being held in every district area during September to speak with residents and answer any questions.
Cllr Rob Gibson, deputy leader of Lincolnshire County Council and executive member for local government reorganisation, said:
“This data reinforces our belief that this is the best option for reorganising councils in Lincolnshire. With the government making it clear that they want to abolish ‘two-tier’ council systems, the ‘Your Lincolnshire’ proposal keeps vital support services together and delivers the best value for taxpayers’ money.
“And, with the ambitious timescale the government has set out, including shadow elections for the new council expected to take place in 2027, our proposal could feasibly be delivered in that short space of time and minimise the disruption.”
