Lincolnshire County Council Highways – the numbers are in

Kerb and machine highways roadwork gang

It’s been an amazing three months of repairs and improvements for the teams on the ground

The figures are in for the last quarter of the year and LCC Highways has been carrying out loads of work over the 91-day period from July 1 to September 30.

In total, that three months saw the service area repair a huge 11,191 faults which works out to 123 a DAY, seven days a week.

Of that, Highways reactive safety works teams repaired 7,349 carriageway potholes (including edge potholes) that were reported to us (81 a day), it also fixed 324 gully grates and manhole covers, made good a huge 965 footway defects, completely replaced 5 gully pots AND carried out 2748 kerbing repairs, 462 vegetation removal (for visibility) jobs and repaired or replaced 302 signs.

But that’s not all. The minor works gangs have also been hard at it for that quarter of the year, too. With their jobs being larger in scope than the reactive safety works, minor works gangs focus on things likes civils, minor patching, and drainage. There were 581 of these larger types of job completed across the county across the 91 days (more than 6 a day).

This included: 146 tree jobs, 197 carriageway sites, 221 drainage jobs, 10 kerbing repairs and 88 footway repairs.

In terms of traffic signals things have also been just as busy with a brilliant 72 out of 73 emergency faults (the teams getting to them within a 2-hour response) attended in time (that’s 98.6%). In fact, 598 of the 605 total faults received during the 91 days have been cleared within set timescales to give an overall rating of 98.8%.

38 requests for signals to be switched off for road works were carried out AND the Traffic Signal Capital Refurbishment Programme (upgrading the signals for more modern equipment) for the three months saw schemes completed at:

  • Brayford Way / Campus Way, Lincoln – junction refurbishment together with improved pedestrian/cycle facilities

  • Ryhall Road (St George’s Avenue) & Ryhall Road (Melbourne Road), Stamford – refurbishment of Puffin crossings alongside programmed resurfacing works

  • Tritton Road / Dixon Street, Lincoln – full refurbishment as part of the Western Growth Corridor works

  • Brook Street (Albion Place), Grantham – widening and refurbishment of Puffin crossing outside King’s School

Cllr Michael Cheyne, Executive member for Highways at Lincolnshire County Council said: “The figures are very encouraging and show the hard work that’s being carried out by the county council to get the roads improving.

“We aren’t resting on our laurels though, the teams have been putting in a great effort to achieve these figures, but we all know that we have more to do. We’re not blind to that and we’re not complacent.

“Bringing in initiatives like a trial of the JCB Pothole Pro, the Roadmender Elastomac machinery and other things show that we really are trying to think outside the box and explore every available opportunity we can to make the road network better.

“Lincolnshire’s roads cover a massive 5,500 miles across one of the biggest geographical areas in the UK, with a lot of that over some of the most challenging historically poor building methods used combined with shifting topological grounds underneath. To get that better for road users and pedestrians takes a Herculean task and we’re meeting that specific Lincolnshire challenge very much head on.”
