Hundreds of tree and hedgerow planting packs have been given away to Lincolnshire people to boost the county’s green-leafed canopy.
Over two days at venues in Boothby Wildlands and Bardney Dairies, 200 planting packs were handed out to residents who had registered for free tree or hedgerow bundles.
Each tree pack contained 50 trees, stakes and tree guards. The trees were mix of small-leaved lime, hornbeam, English oak, field maple, wild cherry and hazel.
The hedge packs included 250 hedging plants made up of a native mix of hawthorn, hazel, dogwood, dog rose and blackthorn along with canes and spiral guards. Enough to create up to 50 metres of double-row hedgerow.
Cllr Danny Brookes, Executive member for environment at LCC said: “We have been really pleased with the turnout to these events. We’ve been able to give out all the tree and hedgerow packs that we were offering across the two days.”
Working in partnerships including the Woodland Trust, the Tree Council, Lincolnshire Co-op and Forestry Commission saw LincsWoods – LCC’s tree planting project – put together the third set of tree and hedge giveaways this year.
Cllr Brookes continued: “Lincolnshire County Council is happy to support the planting programme so that those who want to take part can really be hands on and help to install the wider benefits that scheme will bring.
“The previous giveaways were a big success with high demand. What we’ve seen across these two latest days of pack giveaways is a continuation of those efforts. Our investment and continuing partnership with the Woodland Trust underlines our strong commitment to getting more trees and hedges in the ground for our county.”
Paul Woodgate from the Woodland Trust added: “These packs give people who want to do some good for the environment and help local wildlife a really good start in achieving that aim.
“We’re very happy with the success of these initiatives and are planning more for next year. We will make an announcement on how to take part in any future giveaways in early 2026.”
Tree stats around Lincolnshire
Lincolnshire has one of the lowest tree cover rates in the UK at just under 4%, compared to a national average of 13%. Lincolnshire County Council has a goal of planting 750,000 trees across the county. To work towards this, LincWoods - Lincolnshire County Council’s tree planting project - has been developed and we are working in partnership with the Woodland Trust, the Tree Council, Lincolnshire Co-op and Forestry Commission.
What we are doing to improve things?
We are working with landowners, farmers, businesses, parish councils and communities of Lincolnshire to support the planting of new woodlands, hedgerows, orchards and individual trees.
As part of the tree and hedgerow planting scheme, we can offer free help and advice on everything from which species to go for, protection, management, funding and grant options available on a site-specific basis.
