Wainfleet St Mary road closure for three days in February

Wainfleet St Mary road closure diversion route

Highways crew to dig trial holes across the road as first part of riverbank safety plan

Jonathan Evans, Head of Highways Client at Lincolnshire County Council said: "This work is the first stage of what are critically important highways efforts in the area.

“The River Steeping is slowly eroding away the embankment on the outside curve on the route of the watercourse. This is impacting the highway because the embankment is eroding away and is beginning to de-stabilise the post-and-rail fence, plus the footpath itself.

“Our plan is to stabilise the embankment using a suitable technique such as sheet piling. But before that can happen, we need to work out the exact nature and position of utility lines that could be affected by the works.

"We need to carry out a trial hole investigation dig on Vicarage Lane, which will have to happen under a road closure.”

Location of works

The works will be carried out at Vicarage Lane, Wainfleet St Mary.

Dates and times

The trial hole investigation will take up to three days with work dates running from Wednesday, February 4 until the end of Friday, February 6. On site working times on these days will run from 07:30 to 16:00.

Traffic management

A road closure is required for the duration of the works with a diversion route in place throughout.

Diversion route

The signed diversion route will be; Vicarage Lane to Boston Road (B1195) / Boston Road (A52) to St Michaels Lane / Low Road to Vicarage Lane and vice versa.

Jonathan Evans added: “If the bank is left in its current condition, it will eventually reach a stage where it poses safety risks and could gradually lead to the collapse of the road at this site, so we are working hard to address what we can in plenty of time.

“Our crew will do everything possible to complete these works as quickly as we can in order to minimise impact on the local traffic network. In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone effected for their patience and understanding whilst we are completing this important set of exploratory works for Wainfleet St Mary.”
