Seventy-five years ago at 3pm on 8 May, 1945, the war in Europe finally ended, announced by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and followed by His Majesty King George VI addressing the nation.
Celebrations from a relieved nation included thanksgiving services, parades, bonfires, dance hall extensions, flood lighting permitted in selected venues, drinking hours were extended and shops could open for longer.
Very similar events were planned for this year, the 75th anniversary of this historical and memorial day, but as we all know this is sadly not possible with the country in the grip of another threat to our livelihoods and safe keeping.
This day however must not be passed by, the nation will be led again by Her Majesty The Queen when an address to us all will be made from Windsor Castle at 9pm on Friday, 8 May.
We will be reminded, but also uplifted, in recalling the conclusion of this dastardly war which came with such great sacrifice.
Let us try to celebrate under the present restrictions with whatever means we can. Lots of singing and dancing in our homes, bunting and flags in our gardens and windows, a toast to peace and a prayer of thanksgiving.
