Places open for young people at new Fire Cadet units in Grantham and Sleaford.
The Fire Cadets programme helps young people build confidence, resilience, leadership skills and teamwork, while giving them a unique insight into what it’s like to work in the fire and rescue service and support their local communities.
Each unit has places for up to 15 cadets, who will take part in practical activities, learn valuable life skills, and develop knowledge of fire safety, wellbeing and community responsibility.
The programme is designed to support personal development, improve future education and career opportunities, and help young people make new friends in a safe and supportive environment.
Connor, 15, from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s Fire Cadets said: “I’ve been a cadet since 2024 and I’ve never missed a cadet night. You learn loads of new skills, like teamwork, resilience and safety, and you do things you can’t do anywhere else.
“One of my best moments so far was actually in London last year. I was one of the cadets chosen to represent Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. It was great to just be there, but then I was also trusted to lead and give the commands for our group during the parade. I felt so honoured and privileged, and it’s something I won’t forget.”
Amanda Matson, head of community fire prevention and programme leader, added: “Seeing the difference Fire Cadets makes to young people is incredible. It really doesn’t take long for them to build their confidence, show leadership skills, help others and believe in themselves.
“Our cadets are centred around firefighting, but it’s much more than that. It’s about confidence, teamwork and giving young people chances they might not get anywhere else. These new units in Grantham and Sleaford are a brilliant opportunity and we’d love to see as many young people as possible get involved.”
Young people taking part will be supported by trained Cadet Instructors, including serving and former fire service staff and local volunteers, who will help them learn, achieve and thrive.
