Bailgate improvement works reach successful completion

Bailgate Setts - March 2 2026

Improvement works along Lincoln’s historic Bailgate are complete, following several months of work to repair and strengthen the road’s stone surface.

Cllr David East, executive member for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Bailgate is more than just a road. It’s one of Lincoln’s most historic streets, sitting at the heart of the Cathedral Quarter. And this scheme’s aim was to modernise the infrastructure here while carefully preserving the area’s unique character and heritage, ensuring Bailgate continues to thrive for years to come.

“To achieve that, we removed 49,000 stone blocks and re-used roughly 32,000 of the existing stones, replacing the rest with new, like-for-like blocks. This was a massive feat requiring thousands of workforce hours to complete.

“By lifting and relaying the stone blocks onto a stronger base, we’ve created a safer, much more durable surface while maintaining the area’s heritage character. The new surface is also more robust, meaning the need for maintenance over the next twenty years is now significantly reduced.”

Other works carried out as part of the project included:

  • Improving the raised crossing outside Westgate Academy
  • Repairing sections of underground drainage
  • Installing three new streetlights on Bailgate, plus one on Westgate
  • Installed new plant beds around the trees in Westgate 2 car park, where the site compound was located

Cllr East added: “I want to thank all of the businesses and residents within the Bailgate area for their patience throughout the works and for treating our workers with respect throughout. The crew worked tirelessly to get the job done, and the finished product is a testament to their incredible work ethic.”
