Essential diversion works will be carried out later this month to allow for construction of the new road.
UPDATE: Grantham Road closures in May and June postponed - 28/05/2026
Please note that Anglian Water will not be closing Grantham Road as originally planned on the weekends of 30th-31st May; 6th-7th June; 13th-14th June; and 20th-21st June.
Instead, Anglian Water will install temporary traffic signals on Grantham Road over the weekend of 30th-31st May to allow investigatory works to take place to confirm the exact depth and position of an existing water main within the northbound carriageway.
Once Anglian Water has a better understanding of its assets on Grantham Road, the works will be rescheduled and the new dates and details will be shared.
Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said: “National Grid and Anglian Water will both be temporarily closing local roads this summer to carry out utility diversions essential to the North Hykeham Relief Road project.
“Diverting the overheard electrical lines along South Hykeham Road and the water mains at Grantham Road are 100% necessary ahead of us building the two new roundabouts later in the scheme.
“I want to thank everyone in advance for bearing with us while National Grid and Anglian Water complete these works for the relief road project. We’ve been assured by both companies that they will do all they can to carry these works out as efficiently as possible.”
Below are details for the two upcoming utility works road closures:
National Grid
Dates: Monday 22 June for up to two weeks
Closure details: 24/7 road closures on South Hykeham Road
Diversion route: via Butts Lane / Bridge Road / A46 / Newark Road / Boundary Lane, and vice versa
Anglian Water
Dates: 30th-31st May; 6th-7th June; 13th-14th June; and 20th-21st June
Closure details: full road closures on Grantham Road from 6am Saturday to just before midnight on Sunday
Diversion route: via A607 / B1178 / A15, and vice versa
As part of the project, new roundabouts would be built at South Hykeham Road, Brant Road and Grantham Road. A number of bridges would also be constructed, including at Station Road and over the River Witham.
The North Hykeham Relief Road will bring a wide range of benefits once complete, including easing congestion in and around North Hykeham and Lincoln, improving journey reliability, and helping support new housing and employment opportunities. It will also open up land for 4,500 homes and 7 hectares of employment space, along with contributing £800 million in economic benefits for the county over the next 60 years.
The project is being funded using £110 million from the Department for Transport's 'Large Local Majors' programme. The remaining budget will be funded by Lincolnshire County Council and developer contributions, which the council will forward fund.
