Lincolnshire County Council is launching a new Wood Cycle trial at Tattershall Household Waste Recycling Centre to encourage reuse, reduce waste and support local community projects.
The UK generates around 4.5 million tonnes of waste wood every year, much of which is already diverted for recycling or energy recovery. Through this new initiative, any suitable new or used wood brought to the site will be set aside and made available free of charge to residents, charities, and community groups for reuse.
The trial will initially start at Tattershall where there will be a dedicated area for people to donate good-quality wood and for others to collect what they need. The results of the trial will be used to help formulate the next steps.
Accepted types of wood include solid wood, worktops, hardwoods, plywood, chipboard, dimension timber, floorboards, pallets, laminate and wooden doors. Items that are unsuitable include logs or green timber, wood containing nails or woodworm, and certain treated materials.
Cllr Danny Brookes, executive member for environment at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “The Wood Cycle trial reflects our commitment to finding practical, meaningful ways to reduce waste in Lincolnshire. By making good-quality wood available for free, we’re helping residents and community groups access valuable materials that would otherwise go for recycling or energy recovery. This approach not only conserves resources but also supports local projects and strengthens community networks. It’s an innovative initiative that makes the most of what we already have.”
Anyone collecting wood must review the onsite disclaimer and complete a simple log sheet. No personal data is collected. The disclaimer clarifies that wood is provided without warranty and is used at the consumer’s own risk, as set out in the scheme rules.
The Wood Cycle trial aligns with the council’s ongoing commitment to waste minimisation and increasing reuse opportunities countywide.
Further details will be made available on the Lincolnshire County Council website under the Reducing Waste section.
