New haul road to support North Hykeham Relief Road construction

North Hykeham Relief Road - Haul Road
Over 150,000 vehicle movements will be removed from local roads thanks to the temporary haul road being built as part of the scheme.

A major new haul road is set to play a key role in the construction of the relief road, helping to minimise disruption, reduce construction traffic, and improve safety for nearby communities.

As part of the project’s construction methodology, around 8km of purpose-built haul road is being created, running from the A46 to the A15.

Work on the haul road started in early May, with it due to be fully built in August.

The primary purpose of the haul road is to keep construction traffic off the local road network wherever possible, reducing the impact on residents, businesses and day-to-day journeys while providing a dedicated, safe and efficient route for works vehicles.

It will also enable the movement of site-won materials across the project and provide a direct route for the delivery of construction materials, plant and machinery.

By using the haul road, it’s estimated that more than 150,000 construction vehicle movements will be removed from local roads over the course of the project, helping reduce congestion, noise and disruption for residents while improving safety and journey reliability for other road users.

Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said: “Building this haul road is a crucial part of how we’re delivering the North Hykeham Relief Road in a responsible and efficient way.

“By creating a dedicated route for construction traffic, we can dramatically reduce the number of heavy vehicles using local roads, which helps minimise disruption for residents and improves safety for everyone.

“It also allows materials and equipment to be moved around the site much more efficiently, helping to keep the project on track and ensuring we deliver this important new road for the county as smoothly as possible.”

As part of the project, new roundabouts would be built at South Hykeham Road, Brant Road and Grantham Road. A number of bridges would also be constructed, including at Station Road and over the River Witham.

The North Hykeham Relief Road will bring a wide range of benefits once complete, including easing congestion in and around North Hykeham and Lincoln, improving journey reliability, and helping support new housing and employment opportunities. It will also open up land for 4,500 homes and 7 hectares of employment space, along with contributing £800 million in economic benefits for the county over the next 60 years.

The project is being funded using £110 million from the Department for Transport's 'Large Local Majors' programme. The remaining budget will be funded by Lincolnshire County Council and developer contributions, which the council will forward fund.
