North Hykeham Relief Road team helps enhance outdoor learning for local schools

Spires School social value for North Hykeham Relief Road

The NHRR project team recently worked with The Spires Federation to help improve outdoor learning environments at three local primary schools.

Working with Forest School Lead Bonnie Bond, the project team provided a sustainable, site-led solution to support Forest School activities at Digby Church of England Primary School; Dunston St Peter's Church of England Primary School; and Nocton Community Primary School.

Using timber from trees that had been responsibly felled as part of the relief road project, the team supplied a range of natural seating logs and tree stumps in different sizes, creating valuable new resources for pupils while ensuring materials were repurposed rather than going to waste.

The installations will help create engaging outdoor spaces where children can explore, play and learn in a natural environment.

The new resources will support a wide range of educational and wellbeing benefits, including:

  • Encouraging hands-on outdoor learning experiences
  • Supporting creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills
  • Promoting health and wellbeing through greater connection with nature
  • Creating opportunities for imaginative play and exploration

At Dunston St Peter's Church of England Primary School, the materials will also help pupils develop practical skills and confidence through supervised activities involving real tools such as screwdrivers and saws, while supporting fine motor skill development from an early age.

The collaboration has helped enhance and re-establish Forest School areas across all three schools, creating a lasting legacy that will benefit pupils for years to come.

This initiative is part of the wider social value programme being delivered through the North Hykeham Relief Road project. By repurposing site materials, supporting local education providers and creating enriching opportunities for young people, the project team continues to deliver benefits that extend beyond the construction of the new road itself.

The North Hykeham Relief Road is one of Lincolnshire's largest infrastructure projects and is being delivered by Balfour Beatty on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council. Alongside improving transport connections in the area, the project is committed to delivering meaningful social, environmental and economic benefits for local communities throughout construction.
