This Sunday’s episode of BBC One’s Countryfile is well worth a look. The top telly team has been out on our Viking Way as part of the route’s 50th anniversary.
Lincolnshire County Council officers have played a big part in helping shape the episode programme that's a must for all lovers of the countryside in general, and our county in particular.
The episode follows presenters Charlotte Smith and Joe Crowley as they walk sections of the trail and meet the people who know it best. They spend time in the landscapes the Viking Way is known for, look at the area’s Viking history and talk to volunteers and local experts who help keep the route in good condition. There’s also a visit to the Ramblers’ Church and a look at conservation work to protect water voles, which are one of the country’s most threatened mammals.
This is one of several things happening this year to mark the Viking Way’s 50th anniversary. LCC has already launched the badge challenge (badges pictured below), new family activities, Walk of the Month features and the 50 Things to Look Out For. The Countryfile episode adds a special moment in the special year where the route and the people who look after it get some national attention.
LCC officers have been closely involved behind the scenes, helping the production team with research, locations and the stories that show what makes the Viking Way special. Their work has helped shape the programme and make sure Lincolnshire’s landscapes and heritage are shown properly.
The episode airs on Sunday at 6.30pm on BBC One. It will also be available afterwards on BBC iPlayer.
