Work underway on Morris Walk footpath reconstruction in Skegness

Work has now begun on a major upgrade to Morris Walk, the link footpath between Burgh Road and Church Road North in Skegness

It's happening as part of Lincolnshire County Council's Footpath Reconstruction Programme and is going to make a big difference to those locally who use the route. Crews have already made good progress on clearing vegetation and preparing the route for reconstruction.

Cllr Ady Findley, local member for Skegness (pictured below), said: “I’m really pleased to see this work happening for Skegness. Morris Walk is used every day by families, schoolchildren and people heading into town, and it’s been clear for a while that the footpath needed proper attention. It’s worn out, too narrow in places and doesn’t drain well, so getting this work underway is really important. Opening it up, widening it and giving it a fresh surface will make a big difference to how safe and welcoming it feels.”

He added: “This is the first of a three‑phase programme of improvements for the area, with further work planned on Burgh Road later in the year. It’s great to see the investment starting to take shape.”

The scheme began on 13 August and will continue until 28 August 2026, with crews working Monday to Friday between 7:30am and 5:30pm. No weekend work is planned.

The project includes removing the existing surface, widening the footpath, installing improved drainage and cutting back undergrowth and low‑hanging branches along the full length of the link. Once complete, the upgraded route will offer a smoother, brighter and more accessible connection between Burgh Road and Church Road North, particularly for pupils travelling to and from Skegness Academy.

A signed diversion route is currently in place, directing pedestrians via Church Road North, Lyndhurst Avenue and Burgh Road. The link footpath will remain fully closed while reconstruction continues.

Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said: “This is exactly the sort of improvement that makes everyday journeys easier. Morris Walk is a busy link, and by widening it, improving drainage and clearing back the vegetation, we’re giving people a safer, more reliable route. It’s a small scheme in scale, but it will have a real impact for residents.”

The works are expected to cost around £30,000.

Morris Walk also forms part of a wider programme of footpath improvements in the area. The link connects directly to Burgh Road, which is scheduled for its own reconstruction in November 2026 after the holiday season. This will be the third phase of ongoing upgrades along Burgh Road.
