Work is continuing to make good progress on active travel improvements between Spalding and Pinchbeck, with the project now moving through its second phase of construction.
The scheme will create a safer, more accessible route for people walking, wheeling, and cycling between the two communities, while also improving connections to local schools, businesses, services, and residential areas.
Cllr David East, executive member for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "It's great to see this important scheme continuing to make good progress.
"These improvements are all about giving people more choice in how they travel. By creating safer and more attractive routes for walking, wheeling, and cycling, we're making it easier for people to travel between Spalding and Pinchbeck without always needing to use the car.
"Projects like this help improve everyday journeys, encourage healthier lifestyles and support our local communities by making it easier to access schools, shops, workplaces and other key destinations. They also complement our wider investment in Lincolnshire's transport network by providing better connections for everyone."
The project is currently in Phase 1 and 2, covering the section between Kings Road and Park Road.
Current works include:
- Construction of west side footway for Phase 1
- Vegetation clearance for lighting columns installation for Phase 2
- Construction of footway and drainage for Phase 2
- Installation of new traffic signals and islands for Phase 2
The overall scheme includes new and upgraded shared walking and cycling facilities, improved crossing points and associated highway improvements designed to encourage more sustainable travel while enhancing safety for all road users.
Next phases starts in early September
In early September, the project will move into Phases 3 and 4, covering the section between Park Road and Hospital Road.
To allow these works to be carried out safely, the following traffic management will be in place:
- One-way system northbound on Pinchbeck Road from north of Park Road junction with diversion via Pinchbeck Road / Spalding Road / Wardentree Lane / A16 / Holbeach Road / West Elloe Avenue, and vice versa.
- A 24/7 closure of Woolram Wygate until late October (due to the close proximity to the level crossing)
- A signed diversion route will operate via Park Road, Park Close and Woolram Wygate, and vice versa
Please note that access to the hospital from the north will be maintained.
Cllr Ingrid Sheard, county councillor for Spalding Elloe, said: “I know the current works have been frustrating for residents, particularly with our active travel improvements taking place alongside utility works in the area, so I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
"I am working closely with our highways team to ensure all on-site signage is as clear as possible to ensure people know the best route possible where works are happening. In the meantime, I want to assure everyone affected that the project team is doing all they can to complete each phase as quickly and safely as possible.
"These works will be well worth it when finished later this year. Our end goal is to provide safer walking and cycling routes for our community, leading to healthier lifestyles, less traffic and better connections between Spalding and Pinchbeck."
The active travel improvements form part of Lincolnshire County Council's wider programme of investment to encourage sustainable travel, improve road safety and provide better transport links for communities across the county.
