Finding the right fit with Connect to Work

Tailored employment support helps Reuben secure paid work that suits his lifestyle and needs.

When Reuben Dunn began looking for work, he wanted a role where he could use his skills, be part of a team and build greater independence.

However, as someone with autism and ADHD, finding the right opportunity was not always straightforward.

Through support from Lincolnshire County Council's Inclusive Employment Team and the UK Government-funded Connect to Work programme, Reuben was introduced to opportunities within the council's Business Support service.

Rather than matching Reuben to an existing vacancy, managers explored where additional support could strengthen their teams and improve day-to-day operations.

Conversations between the service and Connect to Work’s employment specialists identified a role that lined up with Reuben's skills and interests.

Before committing, Reuben chose to complete a work trial to make sure the role was right for him. He met with his potential manager and colleagues, visited the workplace and learned more about the responsibilities and outputs of the role.

Throughout the placement, he received tailored support from his dedicated Employment Specialist. That included things like guides for key tasks, support understanding policies and expectations, and regular check-ins with Reuben and his manager.

It all helped to build his confidence and familiarity with the job and, as the placement progressed, Reuben required less support and began working more independently.

The trial was a success, and following its completion, Rueben and the Business Support team at Lincolnshire County Council decided it was a great fit for all.

Reuben said: "Life at LCC has been brilliant so far. I've settled in very well and learned my job role in a successful manner. I've been adaptable and learned different tasks that I've had to undertake in my role.

“Listening and learning have been key elements in my success, and everyone has been helpful and friendly. I couldn't ask for a better place to work than LCC."

Cllr Paul Lock, Executive Councillor for Economy and Investment, said: "Reuben has shown what can be achieved when people are given the opportunity and support to demonstrate their skills and abilities.

“Our Inclusive Employment Team and the Connect to Work programme have been fantastic at providing the extra time needed to understand his needs and skills, and how they best fit in the organisation. It’s an approach that’s putting people into meaningful roles and building their confidence with a wholly supportive team behind them.

“We are delighted that Reuben has found a role in our Business Support team, where he can continue to develop, contribute to the team and build his career with Lincolnshire County Council, and I’d encourage anyone who needs that little bit of extra help getting into work to look into the Connect to Work programme."

Funded by the UK Government, Connect to Work aims to support people facing barriers to employment into sustainable paid work, while helping employers access a wider and more diverse talent pool.

It is a free programme supporting people across Greater Lincolnshire to find employment that matches their skills and interests, while also helping them stay and thrive in long term roles.
