Work to create a new drainage route as part of the North Hykeham Relief Road will get underway next month, helping to manage water through the scheme ahead of the winter months.
The drainage works will create a route for water to safely flow from the Lincoln Cliff, through the scheme and towards the River Witham. The work is being carried out now as part of the project’s preparations for the wetter winter season.
To allow the work to be completed safely, two temporary road closures will be put in place for up to seven days each in October.
- Brant Road will be closed from Monday 19 October for up to seven days, between Lincoln Lane Farm (Low Road) and Meadow Lane. Meadow Lane itself will not be impacted and will remain open throughout.
- Diversion route via Station Road (Waddington) / Hill Top / Grantham Road / Station Road (Harmston), and vice versa.
- Station Road in Waddington will then be closed from Monday 26 October for up to seven days, between Somerville Close and Staple Lane.
- Diversion route via Brant Road / Newark Road / right onto Cross O’Cliff Hill / London Road / Grantham Road, and vice versa.
- The Station Road closure has been scheduled to coincide with the October half-term holiday to avoid impacts to school bus services that would normally use the road during term time.

Cllr David East, executive member for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “As we head towards the winter months, it’s important we make sure the new relief road has the drainage infrastructure needed to safely manage water through the scheme.
“This is proactive work that will help us prepare for wetter weather, but it does mean we need to put temporary closures in place to give Balfour Beatty the safe working space they need to complete the drainage works.
“We’ve planned the closures carefully to minimise disruption where possible, including scheduling the Station Road closure during the October half-term. I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience and ask road users to follow the signed diversion routes while the works are underway.”
Drivers are asked to follow the signed diversion routes and allow extra time for their journeys while the closures are in place.
Please note that Stagecoach will turn into Waddington Lowfields, so will not be serving Station Road and part of Brant Road during these works. Service 13 will also not serve Millers Road, Grantham Road, Bar Lane and High Street in uphill Waddington.
£110 million was allocated for the project in November 2020 from the Department for Transport's 'Large Local Majors' programme.
The project is being carried out by Balfour Beatty.
