Having joined the council as a teenager, social worker Dawn Willey has been supporting people in need across Lincolnshire for 50 years.
Dawn joined the council when she was just 17, working as an admin assistant in the education welfare office in Boston. From there she moved onto being a clerk at the social services office in Horncastle in 1980, where she became interested in becoming a social worker. Her next step was becoming an assistant social worker, before completing her social work qualification in 1989.
Then, in 1991, Dawn moved onto the Rochford Unit at Pilgrim Hospital, a mental health unit for older adults. During her time there, she qualified as an approved social worker and was then accredited as an approved mental health professional. When the Rochford unit closed in 2020, Dawn relocated to the adult frailty team in Boston where she has remained ever since.
Dawn said: “Looking back over the last 50 years, I can say that I’ve seen many changes within health and social care. Some changes have undoubtedly been for the better, while others have brought new challenges and ways of working.
“While the profession has changed over the years, the commitment, compassion and dedication of those working alongside me has remained a constant. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with many wonderful colleagues.
“Supporting people through difficult times and making a positive difference to their lives has been a privilege. I’ve always enjoyed my role, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, the people I’ve met and the experiences that have shaped me both professionally and personally. It’s been journey I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.”
Tracey Lenton, who has worked with Dawn for a number of years, said: “Dawn has been an invaluable source of support, knowledge and encouragement to countless colleagues. When I started my role as a Community Care Officer in the early 1990s, Dawn was one of the people who helped me find my feet. She always had time to listen, offer guidance and share her wealth of experience, making a real difference to my professional development and confidence.
“What makes Dawn so special is that her support extends far beyond her responsibilities. She genuinely cares about people and has always been there for colleagues, both professionally and personally. This has been true not only for me, but for so many people who have worked, and continue to work, within the Boston Team.
“Dawn is the epitome of dedication and teamwork. She is never afraid to roll up her sleeves and get stuck into whatever needs doing, no matter how challenging the task. Her willingness to help, combined with her positive attitude and unwavering commitment, has earned her the respect and admiration of everyone around her. Congratulations, Dawn, on an extraordinary 50 years of service.”
Cllr Steve Clegg, Executive Member for Adult Care and Health, said: “We are incredibly fortunate to have Dawn as part of our adult care team. Her colleagues all speak very highly of her, highlighting her ability to remain calm and professional in every situation. Her kindness, wisdom, work ethic and friendship have touched the lives of so many people over the years, and her contribution to Lincolnshire cannot be overstated.
“Well done on reaching such an impressive milestone, and thank you for everything you have done and continue to do. We all hope that retirement is still a little way off, because the Boston team wouldn't be the same without you.”
