Archaeology group gets £6000 from county council for excavation of Roman site.
Volunteers from the Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group will be able to continue their excavations into a Roman industrial site, thanks to a grant from Lincolnshire County Council.
The group previously excavated part of a site at Potter Hill, and are now able to undertake a further community dig in June 2027.
The funding is part of the council’s Strategic Grant Fund where county councillors can propose grants for not-for-profit organisations and groups of up to £15,000.
Cllr Marianne Overton MBE, county councillor for Bassingham and Welbourn, applied on behalf of this project. She said: “I was delighted to put this project forward. This group have been amazing. These volunteers have taken a professional approach and done a huge amount of work, discovering the very rich history of this area. I worked on the Navenby Archaeology for several years so I know at first hand just how much care and professionalism is involved. I am really excited about what we might learn from their next dig.”
The group have done much work in the area, including a dig in 2023 that led to the discovery of the ‘Norton Disney dodecahedron’.
Richard Parker, Secretary of the Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group, said: “We’re really grateful to the county council for this grant. It means we’ll be back on Potter Hill in Norton Disney next year to continue our excavations of the site of Roman pottery kilns. We’ve found some really interesting finds – particularly Roman pottery from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, but also bone and metalwork. We’re certain there’s a lot more to find and we’ve had great support from the local community too.”
