Major improvements to Tritton Road, Rope Walk and University Roundabout in Lincoln are now complete, helping create safer, smoother and more reliable journeys through one of the city’s busiest areas.
A major programme of highway and traffic signal improvements to the Tritton Road / Rope Walk area of Lincoln has now been completed following several months of work.
These works form part of Lincolnshire County Council's wider investment in improving Lincoln's highway network, alongside the recently completed Bailgate improvements and the nearly complete Yarborough Hill embankment repair scheme.
Together, these projects will help create safer, smoother and more reliable journeys for Lincoln road users while reducing the need for more disruptive maintenance in the future.
The project included reconstructing sections of the carriageway, replacing ageing traffic signal equipment and improving facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling from just east of the Brayford Wharf East/Rope Walk junction to just beyond the Tritton Road/Morrisons junction.
Cllr David East, executive councillor for highways, said: “This has been a major project involving a huge amount of work. In fact, more than 20,000 hours of work have gone into delivering the improvements, alongside over 9,000 tonnes of new tarmac – a significant investment in the future of this important route.
“The result is a modernised highway, upgraded traffic signals and improved facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling. Just as importantly, carrying out this work now will reduce the need for more disruptive maintenance and emergency repairs in the future.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has used this route during the works for their patience and understanding, as well as the workforce who have worked day and night to deliver the scheme.”
Improvements carried out as part of the project included:
- Replacing the traffic signals at the Tritton Road / Beevor Street junction
- Reconstructing the carriageway at University Roundabout and along Rope Walk / Tritton Road
- Improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists on Tritton Road, including safer crossing points and better connections at Valentine Road and Coulson Road
- Cleaning the existing drainage system while on site
- Installing a new section of footway/cycleway between the Holiday Inn and nearby student accommodation at University Roundabout, helping provide a safer and more attractive route for walking, wheeling and cycling
Below are some facts and figures about the scheme:
- Around 2.5 miles of new traffic signal cables installed
- 50 new traffic signal boxes
- 60 new traffic signals
- More than 1,000 square metres of new tactile paving installed
- More than 100 metres of new kerbs installed
- More than 200 pieces of ironwork replaced or reset
- Around 85 metres of new broadband connection
- More than 20,000 workforce hours across day and night works
The scheme also forms part of the council’s wider £12 million programme focused on maintaining key strategic routes across Lincolnshire and ensuring they remain safe and reliable for the people and businesses that depend on them.
