Bourne firefighters set sights on Everest challenge

Mount Everest

Bourne Fire Station looks to reach new fundraising heights with attempt to climb the equivalent of Everest on ladders in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

Firefighters from Bourne Fire Station are preparing to scale the height of the world's highest mountain as they take on an ambitious ladder-climbing challenge to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity on Sunday 13 December.

The crew will attempt to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth at 8,849 metres, by repeatedly ascending and descending a 13.5-metre fire service ladder.

The challenge will see the crew of twelve firefighters rack up over 600 ladder climbs during the event, requiring excellent stamina, resilience and plenty of encouragement from colleagues and supporters.

Everyone is welcome to come along and support the efforts, and any donations are gratefully received.

Alex Parkin, Watch Manager at Bourne Fire Station said: “We always try and do at least one fundraising event a year to support the Fire Fighters Charity and local good causes. This year we wanted to do something a bit different, and after a vote climbing Everest on ladders came out on top!

“The Fire Fighters charity does such fantastic work for serving and former firefighters, as well as their families. It’s everything from physical rehabilitation to mental health and wellbeing support. Several of our crew have benefited from their services over the years, so it’s only right that we do our bit and give back.

“Our local community are always fantastic in their support whenever we run fundraising, recruitment and station open events. We’d love to see them getting behind us and popping down to the fire station to cheer us on again. As well as the effort, we’ll have hot and cold drinks and cakes on sale so there’ll be something for everyone.”

The Everest ladder climb will take place on Sunday 13 December at Bourne Fire Station, with a bake sale and ‘brew with a crew’ also running throughout the day.

The Fire Fighters Charity provides vital care and support to fire fighters and their families when they need it most. Every donation helps ensure that compassionate support remains available to those who dedicate their lives to keeping others safe.
