A17/A153 Sleaford Rugby Club junction improvements reach midway point

Works to add new approach lanes and install traffic signals are now more than 50% complete.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "Works to improve the A17/A153 Sleaford Rugby Club junction are progressing well, and we're glad to say we've now passed the project's halfway point.

"Since starting back in May, the team has already installed nearly half a mile of new kerbs, over half a mile of new underground utility ducts and 330 tonnes of tarmac.

"We've also improved the road's drainage and are now preparing for the installation of the junction's twelve new traffic signal heads."

Work over the past two months has included:

  • Construction of the embankment, kerbs, drainage and more at the A17 slip road
  • Installing kerbing, drainage and footways on the west side of the A153
  • Constructing sewer holes and completing street light boxes, columns and ducting on the west side
  • Completing traffic signal ducting, kerbing and initial surfacing on the northern traffic island
  • Reconstructing the carriageway on the A17 entry slip lane

Cllr Davies continued: "Over the coming months, we'll be focusing their efforts on eastern side of the scheme, including excavations, drainage, kerbing and street lighting.

"Once all of that work is finished, we carry out final surfacing and white lining, as well as installing the new traffic signals – all with a view to having the new and improved junction fully open this autumn.

"In the meantime, we want to thank everyone for staying patient while we carry out these important works. This junction will operate far better once these works are complete, with drivers from all directions seeing improved journey times and increased safety."

Cllr Richard Wright, Leader of North Kesteven District Council, said: “Working in partnership, I’d like to thank LCC and the highways team for the speed with which they are progressing this project in what continues to be difficult circumstances, and thank residents and the travelling public for their patience, whilst this important enhancement to the junction is carried out.

“We all look forward to the completion of this project.”

Following on from the works at the rugby club junction, improvements to Holdingham Roundabout are set to start in early 2021. This project will see additional lanes added at each approach to the roundabout, along with the installation of traffic signals at some of the roundabout's approaches.

The total cost of the rugby club junction and Holdingham Roundabout projects is £8.25m. This is being funded by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, North Kesteven District Council, Lincolnshire County Council and developer contributions.
