Searching for Saxons - Field walking

The site in Cammeringham, was discovered by metal detectorists in September 2019, who found a series of weapons and dress accessories.

Visit 'Searching for Saxons' on Facebook to see and interact with experts while they rescue the cemetery located near Lincoln.

The discovery of a cremation site close to Lincoln is highly unusual and is part of what marks this as a site of national significance.

Experts will be carrying out the excavation element of the project from 1 September to 11 September.

Lisa Brundle, finds liaison officer at Lincolnshire County Council, said:

"This is really exciting. It is such an important and significant site for our Lincolnshire heritage.

"We've seen amazing jewellery, brooches and weapons found here previously, including a brooch showing a mysterious moustached man – he is thought to have provided the wearer with luck. Who knows what we might find this time!"

"On the Facebook page, there will be lots of amazing resources: daily blogs, videos of our progress and even a virtual open day live streamed from the site, where you can speak to the archaeologists and find out about the site.

"We hope that when the social distancing guidelines are relaxed, locals can have the opportunity to get hands-on with the archaeology and come and meet us at local events."

The project is being run by Network Archaeology and wil linclude excavation of the site, preservation of finds, and working with local schools.
