Major reconstruction works to a section of Skegness's most used road have successfully reached their midway point.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "I'm glad to say that our improvements to Roman Bank in Skegness are continuing to go well and that we've recently reached this important project's halfway point.

"Since starting in September, we've already used nearly 3,000 tonnes of asphalt and other road building materials over the past three and a half months to replace old carriageway and footpaths with new.

"Not only that, but we've also installed a quarter mile of new underground drainage pipes as well as replacing a broken street lighting column and damaged road signs.

"We're also nearly finished with the complete refurbishment of the pedestrian crossing at Sea View Road, with the new traffic signals set to start running in January."

So far, the section of Roman Bank between its signalised junction with Burgh Road and No. 143 is completely finished.

The contractor is currently working on the area between No. 161 and 182, including the Co-op access.

Cllr Davies continued: "Our focus over the next three and a half months will be on completely rebuilding the rest of Roman Bank to just past its junction with Elmhirst Avenue, which will involve digging up and replacing another quarter mile of Roman Bank with 6,000 tonnes of road material and new drainage.

"Progress on-site is continuing ahead as planned and, if the weather continues to agree with us, we still expect to have Roman Bank back open by Easter.

"I want to thank everyone in advance for bearing with us. When we're finished, not only will these improvements help keep the coast's road network up and running, but they'll also mean smoother and safer journeys for everyone traveling in Skegness."

The £4.8m scheme is being co-funded by £3.6m from the Department for Transport's Challenge Fund and £1.2m from Lincolnshire County Council.
