From today, you can view Jan Van Huysum’s magnificent Flowers in a Terracotta Vase (1736-7) on the altarpiece of the Bridge Church Lincoln Community Hub as part of Jan van Huysum Visits.
The Collection Museum and the Bridge Community Hub have been working with the National Gallery on Jan van Huysums Visits, part of a tour of six locations across the nation this summer which will see Van Huysum’s magnificent Flowers in a Terracotta Vase pop up in unusual or unexpected non-museum venues across the UK, aiming to boost wellbeing and stimulate conversations.
The foodbank in the south of the city was chosen as a 'hub of the community' venue, for its outstanding work in providing essential support and food parcels to families and individuals throughout the Covid crisis.
Flowers in a Terracotta Vase, a large-scale painting which shows over 30 species of flowers and plants in bloom, will be on display from Monday 21 June to Friday 26 June between 10am and 6pm and Saturday 26 between 10am – 2pm.
There will also be community craft sessions throughout the week for visitors to enjoy.
National Gallery Director, Dr Gabriele Finaldi, says,
‘This astounding, large flower painting will make an unexpected appearance in unexpected venues across the country. I hope it will make people think about art and the beauty of nature, encourage their own creativity and inspire them to visit their own local museum or art collection.’
Cllr Lindsey Cawrey, executive member for culture at Lincolnshire County Council, adds:
"Art is such a beautiful way for encouraging people to think differently about the world around them and seeing art outside of the usual museums and galleries brings a new relevance to our understanding of what the artist is trying to tell us.
"This pop-up exhibition is a wonderful way for people to engage with art in their own community and I'm delighted we could help make it happen!"
Mike Fowler, Team Leader at Bridge Community Hub, said:
"We are delighted to welcome the National Gallery and to be hosting this amazing art work on behalf of food banks across Lincoln. We can’t wait for our food bank guests to see the painting and for people who love art to maybe see their first food bank up close."
The Bridge Community Hub aims to make a positive impact in our local community and to support people in vulnerable situations to improve resilience and reduce isolation and believes this tour could have a far-reaching legacy and impact on our communities.
The tour will continue to venues across the nation in summer 2021; besides the East Midlands, it will also cover Cornwall, South Yorkshire, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
