Pelham Bridge works near half-way point

Pelham bridge update

Ten weeks of maintenance work started on Lincoln's Pelham Bridge on Monday 7 June; this is how work has progressed this week.

This week crews have continued concreting in the cradles that hold the posts for the new safety barrier.

The cradles on the west side of the bridge have been fully completed and the operatives are nearly half way through those on the eastern side.

Completing the concrete repairs has been a priority this week to ensure the deck is ready and the concrete has cured in time for waterproofing.

There have been a significant number of concrete repairs required to areas of deteriorated and poor quality concrete in the bridge deck; more than we had anticipated.

Some of these have only become evident in the last week as the deck has been thoroughly cleaned off and prepared. All this concrete needs to be repaired before waterproofing can commence.

The number of concrete repairs needed on the bridge deck – although more than we anticipated – has demonstrated why this scheme is required.

The waterproofing team arrived this week and began preparing the joints for re-waterproofing, ensuring that they are in good condition.

The deck needs to pass a test which assesses whether it is clean enough for waterproofing. This is why it was vital to remove all the excess old waterproofing membrane.

Next week we will:

  • Continue to fit the cradles.
  • Begin waterproofing from this weekend and will take roughly a week until completion. Waterproofing can only take place in dry conditions so we are hoping for good weather next week. A layer of tack coat will be placed on top of the waterproofing to help the sand asphalt stick down. This layer of Asphalt will be laid the following week once waterproofing and tack coat painting has finished.

Thank you for bearing with us whilst the bridge is closed. Works are progressing well and on programme for planned completion date.
