Over a mile of kerbs weighing over 120 tonnes to be laid on Pelham Bridge

Pelham Bridge 23/07/2021

Works to repair Pelham Bridge in Lincoln started on 7 June; this week waterproofing work continued, and we began laying the new kerbs.

This week, the waterproofing team finished off spraying around the joints.

The Asphalt sand 'carpet' was laid on Monday and Tuesday. This is a thin protective layer of surfacing on top of the waterproofing.

We began laying the kerbs on both sides of the bridge and setting them in place. This requires a lot of precision and preparation beforehand to ensure that the kerbs are fitted correctly.

Laid end-to-end, the kerbstones would stretch for over a mile, and weigh over 120,000kg (120 metric tonnes) so it's also a very time-consuming job, which will continue into next week.

Next week kerbing work will focus on the main deck and the approaches leading up to the bridge. We will then finish off both outer channels and begin kerbing the centre of the bridge.

The ducting will also be put into position next week for the street lighting cables which will run underneath the surface on the centre of the carriageway.
