The new exhibition and creative arts garden project will open at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life from Friday 28 January.
To kick start the project, artist in residence, Esteban Peña Parga, will explore our relationship with the natural environment, focusing on native wildflowers. Using innovative painting and drawing techniques, as well as new media and technology, this exhibition will evolve as winter turns into spring.
Esteban said: “When applying for the residency I started to research about flowers, about nature and about wildlife, and I found out how flowers communicate with insects in wavelengths – in colours, in lights – that we humans can’t see. And that’s one of the starting points for the residency.
“I also found that meadows are endangered, and I think it would be good to bring attention to that.”
After Esteban’s residency finishes on 6 March, the exhibition will remain at the museum throughout spring 2022. Further events and activities will take place as part of the wider project, including in the outside areas of the museum where we will be developing our garden.
Anita Fox, Learning Manager at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, said: “This is an exciting project for us, and allows us to develop an area of the museum that has never been open to the public before, our secret garden area.
“Schools, community groups and volunteers will all help grow the project throughout the year, with family days and activities. And I hope visitors will see the exhibition and be inspired to visit the other green areas on the museum’s doorstep – including Liquorice Park and the West Common.”
Plan your visit to the Our Patch of Earth exhibition by visiting www.investigatelearning.com. Look out too for one of our leaflets, printed on wildflower seed paper so they can be planted after use! We’d love to see your pictures of what grows when you do plant them.
The Museum of Lincolnshire Life is open Fridays to Sundays, from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free but please book in advance at museumoflincolnshirelife.digitickets.co.uk/tickets.
