Supporting transitions

Guidance and resources for Early Years Educators

In Lincolnshire we believe that every child deserves to have the best possible start to school life.

To achieve this we are guided by The Best Start in Life strategy and the UNICEF model of School Readiness; Ready children, Ready schools, Ready families, ensuring that the first steps of a child’s journey through school are successful.

This journey begins before children start school and only ends when they feel a sense of belonging.

As an Early Years Educator you play a vital role in supporting children and families during transitions in the early years. For transitions to be effective you should work closely with families and your partner schools and settings to plan for each child’s unique needs and interests.

The way in which transitions are managed is central to the child or young person’s development and emotional well-being. This will have a significant impact on the child’s or young person’s capacity to cope with change in the short and long term.

A ‘supported transition’ should include preparation, planning, adjustment and support in collaboration with parents or carers and other professionals.

Lincolnshire Working Together Team

The Lincolnshire Working Together Team (WTT) are commissioned to empower and support mainstream primary settings in meeting the needs of their autistic children and those who have social communication differences. It is therefore WTT’s role to support a successful transition, working alongside the Early years setting or childcare provider, mainstream primary, parents or carers and any other agencies who may be involved to identify what needs to be in place within the school environment and day, in order for the child to succeed.

Our role is to help the school be ready to meet the pupils need in Reception through supporting the transition.
