Your rights as a carer

1.The right to a carer’s assessment

Under the Care Act 2014, all carers are entitled to a carer’s assessment from their local authority. This is your opportunity to discuss:

  • how caring affects your life
  • what support you need to maintain your health and wellbeing
  • whether you’re able or willing to continue caring

You can request an assessment regardless of your income, savings, or the amount of care you provide. Guidance on the Care Act 2014 is available on the Carers UK website. An EasyRead version is also available The Care Act

 2. The right to support

If your assessment shows you have eligible needs, the Lincolnshire Carers Service is required to work with you to develop a personalised support plan. This may include:

  • arranging a break from your caring role
  • help with transport
  • access to local carers’ groups
  • financial support or advice
  • training or equipment

3. The right to be involved in planning

You have the right to be involved in decisions about the care and support provided to the person you care for. This includes hospital discharge planning and care reviews.

4. The right to protection from discrimination

If someone treats you badly because you look after a person with a disability, that is against the law. The Equality Act 2010 says you must not be treated unfairly for helping or supporting someone who has a disability.

5. Your rights at work

If you are employed, you have the right to:

  • request flexible working
  • take time off in emergencies
  • carer’s leave (from April 2024, up to five days unpaid leave each year)

6. Financial support

You may be eligible for:

  • carer’s allowance
  • council tax reductions
  • help with household bills or travel costs
