Private markets not ready to support agriculture’s green dreams
Environmental markets offer opportunities, but farmers need confidence and continued Government support before they can be relied upon as a significant source of income.
At the latest meeting of the Greater Lincolnshire Forum for Agriculture and Horticulture (GLFFAH), members highlighted concerns that private environmental markets remain inconsistent and too immature to replace public funding for environmental projects.
The forum agreed that farmers should be rewarded for delivering environmental benefits, but stressed that profitability, food security and long-term resilience must remain at the heart of policy decisions.
Members also called for a level playing field, arguing that imported food should be held to equivalent environmental, welfare and food safety standards wherever possible. The GLFFAH will continue gathering evidence from Lincolnshire's farming sector to help shape future agricultural policy and support sustainable growth.
