Members of Music for the Memory group
For more than a decade, Music for the Memory has been bringing people together through the power of song.
Founded in 2012, the North Hykeham group offers a welcoming and relaxed space for people living with dementia and their carers to enjoy music, friendship and support.
What began as a simple idea has become a much-loved community gathering where laughter is just as important as the singing.
“It is truly a magic moment when a person with dementia, who may struggle to find their words, sings a whole song from the 1960s,” said Rachel Button, one of the group’s leaders. “It brings a smile to the faces of carers and volunteers alike.”
The group meets on the first and third Monday of every month at The Ark, Moor Lane, North Hykeham, starting at 1.30pm.
After a gentle warm-up, members work their way through a varied songbook featuring everything from traditional favourites and popular classics to songs from the shows.
Chrissy Burn accompanies the singers on keyboard while Linda Hoenes projects the lyrics onto the wall, making it easy for everyone to join in.
Run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers, the group is largely self-funded, with members asked to contribute just £1.50 per session. The benefits go far beyond the singing itself.
Every few months, members swap the rehearsal room for a trip to a garden centre, where coffee, cake and conversation provide even more opportunities for companionship and mutual support.
